Guided Instruction

An instructional practice in which teachers can re-teach or reinforce a specific skill or strategy with a group of students who have similar needs.







Before
  • Assessment - use data to inform instruction
  • Flexible groups; students have similar needs, group stays together until students demonstrate application of strategy
  • Materials selection based on appropriate level, interest, and supports the strategy or standard to be addressed
  • Lesson components:

During
  • State purpose/strategy of lesson
  • Students work independently or collaboratively at own pace
  • Teacher listens or works with student(s) and provides prompts if needed to support use of strategy or concept.

After
  • Ask open-ended questions connected to strategy, concept, or skill
  • Students summarize learning
  • Practice, if needed, is provided.
  • Teacher directs students to apply strategy, concept, or skill during independent instruction.



Guided Math/Technology Instructional Strategies or Lessons

  • Using SmartResponse data for quick checks for understanding (Instant Questions)
  • Edusoft Formative Assessments - Creating guided groups of students with similar instructional needs.
  • Use Kidspiration during ET groups to reinforce learning.
  • Intervention Groups: Work with a guided group of students on an assignment they struggled with, while the remaining class uses laptops for intentional independent learning to further develop and display their understanding of a math concept.

Guided Writing/Technology Instructional Strategies or Lessons


  • Using Edusoft Reports to create guided groups of students with similar needs based on the writing traits.
  • Print the Edusoft Report to track the group meetings.
  • Monitor students that are working independently through SmartSync while working with guided groups.
  • Keep record of work completed by the guided groups.
