Shared Instruction

Shared Instruction from Katie Guile on Vimeo.

An instructional practice in which the teacher both reads the text or problem aloud and facilitates learning by interacting with students.

  • Text available visually to all.
  • Teacher takes the lead when reading problems or texts and students follow along either silently or orally.
  • Teacher and students share responsibility of reading a problem and thinking about the steps or possible solution.
  • Teacher and students engage in discussion about the strategy or process being taught.

Observable Math/Technology Lessons and Instructional Strategies

  • The teacher reads aloud the problem or example and student groups (or individual students) work out a teacher-directed activity, step in the problem, or portion of a problem.
    • Students use smartboard to show how they solved it and explain their thinking.
    • Students work is projected for everyone using netbooks for groups to explain.
    • Group/Student work is displayed using document camera.

Observable Writing/Technology Lessons and Instructional Strategies

  • Display authentic writing using the Doc Camera and allowing students to practice editing and revising on the SmartBoard.
  • Students evaluate a sample piece of writing in groups to determine if the main idea is clear. We then displayed their sample using the Doc Camera and the groups presented their sample.
  • SmartBoard interactive games related to lesson created by teacher and students:
    • Random word chooser (Bingo and Vocab)
    • Anagrams (Vocab)
    • Category Sort
    • Pairs (Memory)
    • Sentence arrange (Organization)
    • Word Guess (Vocab)
